Hornets Fall in Doubleheader versus Alcorn State

MERIDIAN, Miss. — The Alabama State University baseball team dropped both games of a SWAC doubleheader versus Alcorn State at Sykes Field on Wednesday. The Braves won the contests by the scores of 12-4 and 4-0.

The Bama State-Alcorn series was originally scheduled for Mar. 14-15 in Montgomery but those games were postponed due to inclement weather.

Seven different Hornet players registered a hit in the opening game, but the Alabama State pitching staff surrendered 15 hits over the seven inning contest. Alcorn State scored runs in five of seven innings and held a 6-1 lead through the first three frames before Bama State rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. T.J. Griggs laced an RBI double while Drew Quinney and Gerald Washington each drove in a run for the Hornets in the surge.

Alcorn scored the final six runs to earn the game one victory.

Braves' pitcher Darry Jordan held Alabama State in check during game two, recording a complete game two hit shutout. Jordan finished the game with 14 strikeouts.

Washington and Ray Pickering tallied the Hornets' lone hits in the contest.

Neither team scored a run through the first three innings, but Alcorn State broke things open with three runs in the top of the fourth.

Alabama State (15-28) concludes the 2009 baseball season with a doubleheader at Georgia State on Friday.
