MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama State University’s interim Athletic Director, Sterling Steward Jr., announced the additions of Genese Lavalais, Kamari Wooten and Maurice Heard as academic advisors in the ASU Athletic Department.
“I am very pleased with the three individuals who were selected and accepted the offers to join us as athletic academic advisors,” said Steward. “Their enthusiasm for athletics and desire to be part of our organization will clearly add a tremendous amount to ASU athletics.”
Lavalais comes to ASU after serving as a special assistant to the athletic department at Baton Rouge (La.) Community College.
Her career has allowed her to gain valuable experience in a variety of areas and has included stints as an athletic department intern at LSU, an assistant high school basketball coach at Marksville (La.) High, a fitness staff member at Louisiana Athletic Club and a team assistant for South Arkansas Youth Services.
Lavalais earned her bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Southern Arkansas University in 2004 and then earned a master's in sports administration from Grambling State in 2007.
Wooten joins Alabama State following a two-year stint as a teacher assistant at Martin Luther King High School in Lexington, Ky.
A former collegiate basketball player at Kentucky State University and Wayne County CC, Wooten gained additional experience in athletics while serving as a volunteer assistant coach at KSU and as an athletic academic advisor at Eastern Kentucky University.
Wooten holds a bachelor's degree in physical education from Kentucky State (2007) and a master's in sports administration from Eastern Kentucky (2008).
Heard comes to ASU after serving a four-year stint as the assistant business manager for housing at Tuskegee University.
He owns extensive experience in collegiate athletics having served as an assistant football coach at Alabama A&M, Fort Valley State, Delaware State and Savannah State. While at SSU, Heard served as the head baseball coach and was a classroom instructor.
In addition, he also worked as an instructional assistant and assistant football coach at Cedar Grove High School in Georgia.
Heard earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Tuskegee in 1993 and completed work for his master's in sports and fitness management from Troy University in 2009.
