Athletic Department Holds Annual Awards Banquet

Bama State celebrated the athletic successes of 2009-10
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama State University athletic department held its annual athletic awards banquet at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Friday night.

Johnny Mitchell, former ASU basketball coach and student-athlete, presided over the event while interim Athletic Director Sterling Steward and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Sharron Herron-Williams delivered remarks at the event, which unofficially marks the conclusion of the 2009-10 athletic season.

Hornet student-athletes were recognized and honored for their successes both on and off the playing field. Each athletic program presented its annual team awards during the ceremony. Special recognition was paid to the SWAC Championships earned by Alabama State teams this season including the men's and women's indoor track and field teams.

Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Support Danita Townsend recognized the outstanding achievement of ASU student-athletes in the classroom honoring men's tennis standout Denys Alyeksyeyev and women's tennis player Sheniece Rawlins as the top academic student-athletes. Both athletes have maintained a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA during their careers at Alabama State.

Overall, 96 ASU student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.0 or better this year including seven perfect 4.0 performers.
