The Alabama State University football team practiced in brisk conditions late Wednesday afternoon at Hornet Stadium.
“It was good. It was different,” head coach
Reggie Barlow said of Wednesday's workout. “It was cold. The weather broke for us. We're staying within the theme of this week of getting some work in, but real detail oriented still introducing Alabama A&M schemes to the players. We had good energy and we got accomplished what we needed to.”
Alabama State (6-1 overall, 6-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference) will face the Bulldogs (5-2, 5-1) in the 70
th State Farm Magic City Classic presented by Coca-Cola next Saturday, October 29 at 2:30 p.m. at Birmingham's Legion Field.
“They run the ball well,” Barlow said of the Alabama A&M offense. “We haven't been very good against the run this year. They are running it, and we have our work cut out for us. They have a good scheme and we have to make sure we have gap integrity. Our linebackers have to make sure they are in the right position.”
The defense has exemplified the bend-but-don't-break theory this season, as three times they have played at least 90 plays in a game. The philosophy held true last week against Prairie View A&M, as the Hornets' defense was on the field for 107 plays, but allowed just seven points and forced three turnovers.
“That speaks to our guys being in good shape,” Barlow said. “From the 20-yard line to 20-yard line, we've given up a lot of yards and plays. However, the goal is to keep them out of the end zone. Our defense has done a good job of that, but we also have to do a better job on offense running the ball so we can limit the amount of touches our opponents get.”
The Hornets will practice Thursday at 11 a.m.
