TUSCALOOSA—Austen Smith had a homerun and five RBI to lead the University of Alabama to a 11-7 win over Alabama State University in baseball action.
The Crimson Tide took advantage of some erratic pitching by the Hornets as five ASU pitchers issued 13 bases on balls while only giving up seven hits.
The game was scoreless before Alabama pushed across four runs in the third and fourth innings and another two runs in the fifth inning to build a 10-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, the Hornets finally broke through against the Tide when
Jourdan Mott doubled in
Jordan Mims to get ASU in the scoring column.
It was the seventh inning that saw ASU push across six runs against the Southeastern Conference power.
Darrion Pedro had a bases-loaded walk that scored a run, and Mott followed that up with a RBI single and Andrew Pitts added a double to score two runs. The final run of the inning came on a
Kejuan Riley RBI ground out.
Mott finished with two hits and a run to go along with his two RBI. Pitts also had two hits and two RBI while scoring a run.
Jared Reaves had two hits for UA, scoring three times and adding two RBI. Brett Booth had two RBI and a hit for the Tide.
Taylor Wolfe was the winning pitcher for UA, going five innings without allowing a run. He had nine strikeouts in his appearance.
Drew Quinney took the loss for ASU. He pitched three innings only allowing three hits, but walking five and giving up four runs.
ASU falls to 3-1 on the season while the Tide remains undefeated at 4-0. ASU will be back in action when they travel to Macon, Ga., to face Mercer on Friday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m.
