A Look Back at ASU's Football Win over JSU

Note:  This is one of a series of stories looking back on the best games/performances/contests of the 2010-2011 Alabama State Athletic Season.  Today's look back will focus on the ASU football team's final push for the Eastern Division Championship and that started with a huge late-season win over Jackson State University.

Devin Dominguez threw four touchdown passes to three different receivers in leading Alabama State University to a 32-30 win over Jackson State University. The win by the Hornets move them into first place in the Eastern Division of the Southwestern Athletic Conference with a 5-3 mark. The Hornets are 6-3 overall.
The loss by JSU drops them to 6-3 overall and 4-3 in conference action.

The game was not over until the Hornets were able to run out the clock after JSU cut the lead to 32-30 after Casey Therriault scored on a fourth down from the one yard line to cut the lead to two.

After that the Hornets received the kickoff and were able to run out the final 3:50 off the clock with the help of a huge penalty from JSU. With two minutes left JSU had stopped ASU short on a third down run and a JSU defender spiked the ball in front of the ASU bench which resulted in an unsportsmanlike penalty and an automatic first down for ASU. From there the Hornets ran out the clock.

JSU trailed 25-10 at halftime, but it only took two plays for the Tigers to score on their first possession of the second half. JSU went for two and did not make it, which turned out to be a big play as the game wore on.

After holding the Hornets to a three and out, JSU went right back down the field and scored again on a Therriault six-yard run to cut the lead to 25-23.

ASU pushed the lead back out to nine with Dominguez hitting T.C. McWilliams from 11 yards out for ASU's final score. It was McWilliams' second score of the game.

The Hornets built their 25-10 halftime lead based on three touchdown passes from Dominguez. After Andrew Lyons kicked a 22-yard field goal to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead, Dominguez threw his first touchdown pass on a simple screen play that Tim Clark turned into an 81-yard score.

JSU came right back and cut the lead to three when Therriault hit Keenan Tillman from 33 yards out for a score. Following a three and out by the Hornets, Nigel Carr stepped in front of a Therriault pass and returned the interception to JSU's 14 yard line. From there ASU took five plays to cover the distance with the final six yards coming on a touchdown pass to Nick Andrews. The Hornets went for two after the score and Quendarius McKibbon was able to get across the goal line for the conversion, which turned out to be the difference in the game.

After Reed Gallagher kicked a 39-yard field goal to again cut the lead to 18-10, the Hornets took off on a 10-play, 88 yard drive that culminated with Dominguez hitting T.C. McWilliams from seven yards out to push the lead out to 25-10.

Dominguez finished the game completing 12 of his 23 passes for 223 yards and the four scores. He also rushed for 19 yards.

The Hornets were semi-successful in running the football as they finished the game with 145 yards rushing on 48 carries. ASU finished with 368 yards of offense.

McKibbon led the ASU rushers with 66 yards on 14 carries, while Andrew Pitts had 50 yards on 19 carries.

JSU entered the game as the top offense in the conference. They finished the game with 399 yards of total offense which was a little under the 409 yards total offense they averaged per game.

Therriault was averaging 330 yards passing per game and finished the game throwing for 305 yards, completing 18 of his 41 attempts. He also threw three interceptions and ASU scored points off each of those turnovers.

Kejuan Riley had two interceptions and Nigel Carr had one. Two of the three interceptions were returned deep into Tiger territory which gave ASU a short field to work with. Riley entered the game tied for the SWAC lead in interceptions with four.

Riley also led the defense with seven tackles. Jacques Rickerson and Brandon Roberts had five stops each, while Maurice Tate, Kynjee Cotton and Carr all registered sacks.

“We played well and had to fight to the end,” head coach Reggie Barlow said. “They are a good team and knew they would play all the way to the end. I am happy we have good players that played hard to the end of the game.”

“Our defense played hard the whole game,” Barlow said. “We knew they were very good on the offensive side of the ball and we could not let up the whole game. Coach Thornton thought they would intercept three passes in the game, and they did, and really had a chance to intercept a few more.”
