2010 Football Season Review

The Alabama State football team returned to championship form in 2010, winning the SWAC Eastern Division Championship.

The Hornets' division championship was their first since 2004 and third in the past eight years. Alabama State posted a 7-5 overall record, 6-3 in conference play.

The season proved to be a roller coaster ride of streaks. ASU began the season by winning three games in a row, before losing its next three. The Hornets then followed that with a four-game win streak before losing the final two games.

Alabama State started with home wins over Mississippi Valley State (34-6) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (38-31) before going on the road to shock then-defending champion Prairie View A&M (18-15).

Following losses at Alcorn State (21-41), vs. Texas Southern (7-21) and at Grambling St. (7-22), the Hornets came back to win four in a row in impressive fashion. ASU shutout Savannah St. (24-0) before taking down arch-rival Alabama A&M in the State Farm Magic City Classic (31-10).

Alabama State then defeated Jackson State (32-30) at home before winning the Eastern Division title with a 21-19 road win at Southern.

The Hornets ended the season with losses to Tuskegee (10-17) in the Turkey Day Classic and to Texas Southern (6-11) in the 2010 SWAC Championship.

Alabama State finished in the Top 3 in the SWAC in 13 categories, eight of which also ranked in the FCS Top 20: takeaways (4th), pass efficiency defense (5th), interceptions (tied for 5th), fumble recoveries (tied for eighth), scoring defense (12th), kickoff returns (13th), punt returns (16th) and pass defense (18th).
