The Alabama State football team finished its second session of two-a-days Friday in final preparation for Saturday's 8 a.m. scrimmage at Hornet Stadium.
The afternoon practice focused on emphasizing knowledge of plays, formations and sets during the two-hour practice in helmets and shorts.
“We wanted to take the pads off and give the players an opportunity to mentally grasp everything,” head coach Reggie Barlow said. “We talked a lot more specifics of plays today, and worked on specialty plays that you have in the game plan regularly. We really wanted them to be into it mentally this afternoon.”
After 11 practices so far this month, Barlow has specific things he will be looking for in Saturday's scrimmage.
“I want to see how they get the play call in, react, in the midst of game type situations,” Barlow said. “I want to see how quarterback Greg Jenkins manages the offense. I want to see our defense get lined up and make the right call. There are certain things in the secondary I want to see how they respond to in a live-type atmosphere. I also want to see how we tackle. We've been tagging off for most of camp and I want to see how we perform there also.”
Following Saturday's scrimmage, the Hornets will host the Central Alabama Youth Football League's Family and Friends Day.
