The Alabama State University football team held its first scrimmage of the preseason Saturday morning at Hornet Stadium.
The approximately 60 play scrimmage saw the offensive pass for 248 of its 340 total yards as five quarterbacks combined to complete 19 of 31 passes with one touchdown and two interceptions.
The offense produced three scoring drives, two ending in touchdowns. QB Greg Jenkins threw a 64-yard scoring pass to WR John Andrews, and RB Montavious Paulk scored on a 60-yard touchdown run.
Jenkins completed 3-of-6 passes for 87 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions with the first unit. Andrews led all receivers with three receptions for 76 yards.
QB Devin Dominguez led a 12-play, 52-yard scoring drive that ended with a 25-yard field goal by Bobby Wenzig.
“We are coming along well,” offensive coordinator Fred Kaiss said. “We're not there yet, but we are coming together as a team. They are starting care about one another, they are starting to push one another and we're really close to taking off. The first group is starting to separate itself. If we can get the second group to pick it up and go with them, we're going to be ready to roll.”
Defensively, DT DreQuay Everett and CB Darius Knox recorded interceptions, with Knox nearly reaching the end zone after a 50-yard return.
CB Corey Schofield and LB Willie Roller each made four tackles, with Roller also adding a fumble recovery. Edward Mosley had a pair of sacks and one forced fumble which was recovered by DE Chris Terry.
“I saw what I wanted to see today,” defensive coordinator Cedric Thornton said. “I wanted to play a lot of guys and for the most part, the guys showed me they have been studying what we want them to do. I feel good about a lot of my older guys. They've been here, they know what I want and need from them. If I can get them to stay disciplined and focused, we will have no problems.”
The Hornets will be off Sunday and return to practice Monday for its final two-a-days at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
