Barlow Pleased With First Scrimmage

Head football coach Reggie Barlow saw a lot to be pleased with after the Alabama State football team's first August scrimmage Saturday morning at Hornet Stadium.

“I saw a lot of good things,” Barlow said after reviewing the video. “WR John Andrews had an explosive day. RB Montavious Paulk had a long touchdown run. I also thought our young quarterbacks did some good things.”

Andrews caught a 64-yard touchdown pass out of the slot on the second series from QB Greg Jenkins. Paulk's weaving touchdown run came on a quick cut through the left side and down the near sideline before a nifty cutback across the middle made an open lane to the end zone.

“We know what Greg brings to the table, so we didn't need to see a lot from him,” Barlow said. “Greg connecting with John on the touchdown pass was good to see. OL Edmond Davis and L.J. Abrams were solid. We just need a few more guys to step up.”

Several young players caught Barlow's eye on the defensive side of the ball as well.

“CB Darius Knox played well, coming up with an interception,” Barlow said. “We wanted to see some of these young guys and several of them played well, particularly LBs Marcus Owens and Matt Tyson did some good things.”

Alabama State returns to practice Monday with two sessions at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. and will officially end preseason camp on Tuesday following practice at 3:30 p.m. prior to fall semester classes beginning Wednesday. The season opener at Mississippi Valley State is now less than three weeks away and Barlow is continuing to look for improvement in all areas.

“The plan is to get back to work Monday with two practices, make corrections and get better,” Barlow said. “This week, I'm looking to see how the players retain information while seeing them play faster. Overall I want to see things continue to come together in all three phases of our team.”
