Football Practice Report - Aug. 25

For the first time since last season's SWAC Championship, gameday for the Alabama State University football team is less than 10 days away.

The Hornets had a brisk 90 minute practice Thursday morning at Hornet Stadium.

“It's right around the corner and next week is going to come quickly,” head coach Reggie Barlow said. “Next Friday will be here before you know it and we'll be heading out to Mississippi Valley. We still have tomorrow afternoon (3 p.m.) and Saturday morning (6 a.m.) to get our work in. We're excited about it.”

The Hornets practiced in shoulder pads and shorts continuing to prepare for the Sept. 3 season opener against the Delta Devils.

“These quick practices are always high energy and fast,” Barlow said.  “I wish we could have more of these quick practices but we have to get the work in. Guys had really good attitudes today. They came out and worked hard and did some positive things. QB Greg Jenkins was really good today. We moved some guys around position-wise as well. TE Ron Hall played some tackle for us today and did a good job.”

Hall, a 6-foot-5, 280 junior from Alpharetta, Ga., played both tight end and offensive tackle last season. The ability to play multiple positions Barlow said can help players to earn playing time.

“I learned in the NFL that it was about 'the more you can do,'” Barlow said. “A guy like Ron is fast like a tight end, but he's in that mode physically of an offensive tackle. With his size, combined with what we do offensively with our concepts for us, he is able be a good blocker for us.”
