The Alabama State University soccer team encountered a shootout Thursday afternoon from the Johnny Downs Soccer Complex. The Hornets fell to Prairie View A&M in the first round of the 2012 Southwestern Athletic Conference Soccer Tournament with a final of 3-2.
“Well when you are in tournament play and you lose, you are eliminated,” head coach
Jodie Smith said. “We dug a hole for ourselves in the first half, but we showed a lot of character being down two goals twice in the match, but in the end, the little mistakes on the back end cost us.”
“I think we grew as a team, and I'm not disappointed at all how our season went this year, just disappointed of how it ended, but I'm very proud of our girls and what we'd accomplished.”
PV (8-10) scored first at the 25 minute mark when Yosselyn Aguilar sprinted through ASU defenders knocking in a kick from the right hand side. Christine Hanson scored PV's second goal of the half 13 minutes later with an assist from Aguilar.
ASU (7-8-2) would quickly respond when junior forward
India Pleasant assisted sophomore forward
Alexandria Cannon with 5:49 left in the first half.
The Panthers, the only team ASU did not face this season, would waste no time extending their lead as Navyd Diaz made it 3-1 two minutes into the second half.
Cannon would again bring the Hornets within a goal with an assisted goal from freshman forward
Anastasia McCleary in the 62nd minute of the match.
“Again offensively, we've been led by the same people all year,” said Smith. “India and Annie (McCleary) had the assists and has led us all season in that category; while Alex led us in scoring, so again, I'm proud of all the ladies and hopefully we can have another great season next season.”
The goal from Cannon would round out the scoring for both teams and end the season for ASU.
