The Alabama State football team had a vigorous practice session on Thursday afternoon continuing provisions toward Saturday's conference matchup against Southern.
The Hornets (6-3 overall, 6-2 SWAC) will face the Jaguars (3-6, 2-5) Saturday at 6 p.m. in Baton Rouge, La. at Southern's A.W. Mumford Stadium. The contest will broadcast live on WVAS 90.7 F.M.
ASU worked in great conditions this afternoon at Hornets Stadium, working quickly but was efficient and potent going through its schemes.
“Practice went well today,” head coach
Reggie Barlow said. “This was the third day where the guys have had a lot of energy and been enthused and we appreciate them for that. It's been a long season, so whenever they come out and have good energy, I'm proud.”
The Jaguars lead the Southwestern Athletic Conference in pass offense with 231.3 yards/game and 2082 through the air.
“They run the West Coast system and do a lot of the West Coast schemes, throwing slants, curls, flats, etc.,” said Barlow. “We just have to stay in front of the guys, redirect them in the slot, don't let them get free releases, and those balls that they throw short, we have to rally and tackle. That's going to be very important.”
Alabama State worked extensively on its special team organization, making sure everyone stick to his own lane assignment and be able to rally to the ball effectively.
“Virgil Williams is a really good player,” said Barlow. “We know about him and he's solid. It's going to be important when it comes to balance, squeeze this guy with the inside shoulder and have a lot guys that rally to him. I think these guys will be up for the challenge. They know about him and they know what type of returner he is.”
