Spirited Effort Marks Friday Practice

A spirited intensity marked Friday's Alabama State University football's 90-minute practice at Hornet Stadium. The Hornets will have their second scrimmage of the spring Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

“We've had pretty good energy throughout,” head coach Reggie Barlow said. “It being Friday, good weather, we were in shells, that combination of things added to the players having the energy level we wanted. It was a good, physical practice. The defense again stepped and did some good things. We're happy with how it went today.”

The offense had an improved practiced as a unit, after a subpar performance Thursday.

“It was better, but it still wasn't what we would have liked,” Barlow said of the offense's performance. “I think they were feeling themselves a bit after scoring seven touchdowns in the scrimmage last week. Some of the guys have hit the wall, but we have good leadership on offense and we have guys like linemen Terren Jones and Edmund Davis that I know we can count on to do what we're supposed to do.”

Alabama State will look to run 60-70 plays in the scrimmage, and Barlow has specific areas within the offense and defense he will focus on.

“Defensively, I'm looking for those guys to play with more a little more confidence,” Barlow said. “I know they have confidence, but they didn't play with it in the last scrimmage. I'm looking for them to have more fun and get stops; more three-and-outs, and to get turnovers.

“Offensively, I'm looking for these young, offensive linemen like Jaron Bush, Tovar Allen and those guys that played last year to kind of grow up and play with more savvy. With the quarterbacks, we know what Greg can do. We're looking for Demetric Price and Daniel Duhart to compete so we'll have an idea going into our spring game as far as who will be the backup.”
