NORMAN, Okla. – The Alabama State baseball team lost the first of a three-game series at Oklahoma, falling to the Sooners 5-0 Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Hornets (16-24) managed just four hits in being shutout for only the second out of the season. Oklahoma (24-14) scored a run in the first, two in the third, and two in the seventh to win the first ever matchup between the teams in baseball.
Alabama State missed a chance to cut into the deficit in the fifth, as
Waldyvan Estrada walked and
Leo Rojas reached on an error to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by
Darrion Pedro moved the runners over to second and third,
Manny Rodriguez was robbed of a hit up the middle, followed by a strikeout to end the threat.
“I'm a little disappointed in our offensive performance; needless to say getting four hits is not going to win many ball games,” head coach
Mervyl Melendez said. “I thought our bullpen did a decent job keeping us in the ball game, but we just didn't get anything offensively. I think we only got runners in scoring position three or four times in the game. We just have to do a better job offensively.”
The Hornets and Sooners play the second game of the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
