BIRMINGHAM – Alabama State University had eight players named to the Preseason All-SWAC teams, as voted on by the league's head coaches, sports information directors, and selected members of the media.  The teams were released Monday, July 16 at the start of the SWAC Football Media Days held in Birmingham.

 
All-American candidate, Kejaun Riley, leads a group of three defensive players named to the first team.  Along with Riley are fellow defensive back Saeed Lee, and defensive lineman Carlton Jones on the first team.
 
Offensive lineman Terren Jones, a two-time All-SWAC pick, was once again named to the first team and punter Bobby Wenzig also received first-team honors.
 
Quarterback Greg Jenkins was named Second Team All-SWAC as was receiver T.C. McWilliams.  On the defensive side of the ball, Brandon Slater was named Second Team at linebacker.
 
“You have to give kudos to our coaches that were able to go out and bring the players in, develop them and help them grow as players,” head coach Reggie Barlow said.  “They have done a good job recruiting and it is good the see the voters believe in the players we have here, but what I want to see is for our players to be on the list at the end of the season.”
 
The Hornets have won a share of the last two SWAC Eastern Division Championships and this year they have been chosen to win the Eastern Division by receiving 11 votes.  Jackson State and Alabama A&M finished tied for second in the conference with seven votes each and Alcorn State received one first place vote, to finish fourth.  Mississippi Valley State finished fifth in the Eastern Division voting.
 
Last year's SWAC Champion, Grambling State, received 20 votes in being picked to win the Western Division.  They easily out-distanced Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Southern, who each received two votes while Prairie View received one.
 
“It is good to see our program receive some respect from the voters,” Barlow added.  “But again, I want to be at the top at the end of the season.  The games have to be played on the field and it is exciting for the players.  That vote has never turned out right as far as what they have picked us in the past, so hopefully it is right this season.”
