Hornets Have Strong Morning Practice

The Alabama State football team returned to practice Friday morning, working for about two hours in full pads at Hornet Stadium.

After a challenging three-day stretch in which the Hornets practiced six times, including three sessions on Wednesday, the team had Thursday off.

“I thought the energy and effort was good,” head coach Reggie Barlow said of the first practice after the day off. “Guys were competing and playing well. I saw improvement in some guys today. We've wanted Tovar Allen and Damian Love on the offensive line to step up and they did some good things. We still need our group to continue to develop. Defensive-line wise, we need Akeem Moore to step up. He's going to have to help us, so we need him to continue to improve.”

A significant aspect of fall camp is the transferring of information knowledge from the meeting room to the practice field. A portion of the morning practice focused on making adjustments to the adjustments at the line of scrimmage, the proverbial in-game chess match between offense and defense when formations change.

“We try to pride ourselves on giving our players in practice every situation they may encounter in a game,” Barlow said. “Today, we worked on adjustments on pre-snap motion and things of that nature. That's something that is important. We know it's going to happen in a game. When you playing against a team, there's no telling what they may do formation-wise. We have to make sure our guys see it, and make the adjustments in a game.”

The gridiron Hornets return to practice at 7 p.m. tonight and will scrimmage Saturday at 9 a.m. as part of Fall Fan Fest Activities. The Mighty Marching Hornets Band will be in attendance during the scrimmage, with free food and games immediately following. At noon, the ASU cross country, football, soccer and volleyball teams will be presented, followed by autographs with student-athletes and coaches. The day concludes with fans able to watch the Lady Hornet volleyball team practice at 2 p.m. in Lockhart Gym.
