Coming off a gutsy road win against the defending champs, the Alabama State football team was back on the practice field Monday night getting ready to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff Thursday night.
The Hornets play host to the Golden Lions at Cramton Bowl at 6:30 p.m. It's Faith, Family and Military night as fans are encouraged to wear ASU gold to the game, which will be broadcast live on WVAS 90.7 FM and televised live on ESPNU.
Less than 48 hours after defeating Grambling 19-18 Saturday night, Alabama State (2-1 overall, 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) went to work getting familiar with UAPB (2-1, 1-1).
“We adjusted the schedule because it is a short week, and weather was a factor as well,” head coach
Reggie Barlow said of the conditions as moderate to heavy rain was in the Montgomery area most of the afternoon and into the early evening. “So we changed some things up and adjusted periods, but we were able to get the critical periods in that we needed. It was a good practice, and we still have a few more days to get dialed in and be on the same page.”
The Golden Lions enter this week's game with the league's top scoring defense (yielding 11.3 points per game) and the second-ranked defense based on total yards allowed (239.3 ypg).
“They're a really good defense,” Barlow said of the Arkansas-Pine Bluff defense which returns a host of starters to the defensive unit. “It's a veteran group. They understand what their coaches want them to do. They play fast. I've enjoyed watching them on film. We have our work cut out for us. We have to make sure we're protecting our quarterback and are effective in the running game.”
The Hornets return to practice Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Wednesday at 3 p.m.
