Hornets Prepare for Alcorn

Hornets Practice for Alcorn State
MONTGOMERY—Alabama State University's men's basketball team will be looking to get back into the win column when they host Alcorn State Monday, Jan. 21 at 5 p.m.

All of the action can be seen via web stream along with the live audio and live stats at ASU's Game Day Central at www.bamastatesports.com.

The Hornets (5-14/3-3 SWAC) are coming off a 79-67 loss to the SWAC's top team Southern University.  Things will not get any easier when Alcorn State (7-15/5-2) comes to town.  The Braves are winners of five of their last seven games and are coming off a road win at Alabama A&M 69-59.

“We have to put the Southern game behind us,” Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  “We have to get in here and look at the game film and get prepared, because Alcorn is playing very well also.”

ASU struggled against the top-ranked defense of Southern, but Alcorn comes into the game as the SWAC's second ranked defense.  Even though they are only averaging 59.2 points per game, they are only allowing the opposition a .378 shooting percentage and are also second in three point defense only allowing .288 shooting percentage.

Alcorn has three of the top scorers in the conference led by Marquis Baker's 18.3 scoring average.  Anthony Nieves is averaging 12.6 points and LeAntwan Luckett is averaging 12.0 points per contest.

Baker and Luckett led Alcorn's efforts in the win over A&M by scoring 25 points each.

Meanwhile, the Hornets offense continues to show signs of life and Joshua Freeman leads the team averaging 12.3 points per game.  Phillip Crawford has scored 50 points and shot 58 percent from the field in the team's past four games and has his average up to 9.5 points per game.

The Hornets were able to put four players into double-digit scoring column led by Crawford's 15 points.  Jamel Waters scored 11 and Ryan Watts and Joshua Freelove added 10 each.

ASU had two players in double digits in rebounding with Bobby Brown grabbing a game, team and career-high 11.  Freelove completed his first double-double of the season by adding a career-high 10 rebounds.

The coaching staff knows they must pick up a win in order to have a chance at the conference title.

“We have to get this split at home in order to stay in the thick of this (SWAC) race,” Jackson said.  “We have to get out here and play a much better game against Alcorn than we played against Southern.”
