TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Alabama State women's golf team won first place at the Florida A&M Rattler Spring Invitational, while the men finished third at Southwood Golf Course.
Brooklyn Kraakman was the low medalist with a one-over 73 in the rain-shortened 18-hole tournament.
Mia Campbell shot 80, Jenelle Kraakman and
Shanon Spinuzzi each shot 81, and Darleen Raymond posted 83 for the ASU team score of 315 to outdistance second-place University of Laval of Canada (331).
“This group is interesting,” head coach
Dr. Gary Grandison said. “Their two best rounds were played at difficult courses they've competed on this year. Unforced errors cost them at least 10 shots, as they were in position to break the school record.”
On the men's side,
Branson Ferrier led Alabama State with a one-over 73, three shots ahead of teammate Jose Rodriguez' 76.
Francis Berthiaume posted a 77,
Ian Mmbando 78 and
Corey Price 83 for the Hornets' team score of 304.
“We struggled during the second day, but I can tell you our guys are improving during the spring season,” Grandison said. “They have struggled so far with abnormal weather conditions, but they are getting tougher. They are young, so we expect growing pains.”
The men's team will return to action Monday and Tuesday in the Alabama A&M Invitational in Scottsboro, Ala., while the women's team will play in the Samford Women's Collegiate Tournament April 8-9.
