M-Box Score ALEXANDRIA, La. –
Ian Mmbando led the field of 39 and Alabama State Men's golf team to a historical opening round shooting four-under par (36-32 68) during the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship; while the women lead the field of six shooting a combined score of 327 on Monday evening.
The Hornets lead the field of 10 schools by 22 strokes going into the second round of the 54-hole tournament; while the women lead the field of eight by eleven stokes finishing up their final round tomorrow.
The men's team had all players score in the top eight at the par 72-7043 yard Oak Wing Golf Course.
Branson Ferrier ranked second shooting three-under par (33-36 69); while Jose Rodriguez finished the day tied for third shooting two-under par (34-36 70).
Francis Berthiaume shot one-under par, ranking fifth on the leaderboard (34-37 71); while
Chris Wilson rounded out the scoring for ASU shooting two-over par, finishing eighth (37-37 74).
“Our coaching staff is extremely pleased with the men's performance today,” ASU's Head Coach
Dr. Gary Grandison said. “We knew that they were prepared but did not expect 10-under ready at that course and at 7000 plus yards.”
The Lady Hornets were led by
Brooklyn Kraakman, who finished the day tied for second shooting eight-over par (39-41 80) at the par 72-6252 yard Links on the Bayou Golf Course. Jenelle Kraakman finished fourth, shooting an 81 (39-42); while
Shanon Spinuzzi ranked fifth recording a round score of 82 (43-39) in the field of 29 participates, respectfully.
Mia Campbell completed the round shooting an 84 (41-43) and Darleen Raymond round out the scoring for the women shooting an 88 (46-42).
“Our women's team played much better than their scores reflected,” said Grandison. “I love their attitudes after the round today and they seem ready to play better tomorrow.”
Round two of the 2013 SWAC Championship continues Tuesday, April 23 beginning at 8 a.m. with the women crowing a champion afterwards and the men completing 36-holes.
