Hornets Start Second Week of Spring Practice

MONTGOMERY, Ala.—The Hornets of Alabama State opened their second week of spring practice today with a focus on preparing for the team's first scrimmage game coming this Saturday, April 13 at 9 a.m.

The coaching staff will spend the second week getting ready for their first scrimmage of the season, but there are several different things the coaching staff will be evaluating over the course of the week.

“It is just another time to see these guys; both offense and defense jell together,” Head Coach Reggie Barlow said.  “I want to see more from certain guys, guys that have been around the program. I want to see vast improvement from a leadership standpoint.”

Barlow added, “I want to see the competition at the defensive back.  We have made some adjustments there on the depth chart and I want to see the younger guys on offense take a big step this week as we get ready for the scrimmage.”

The tempo of the Hornets fast paced offense has always been a work in progress, but over the next few practices the coaching staff will be looking at how efficient the offense is.

“I have slowed them up because we are doing so much situational stuff,” Barlow said.  “Typically we put the ball down and we are moving, but what I have been doing is get a first down and reload.  I want to see what we are going to do on first down, how many yards we pick up on first down, how many times we pick up six yards or more or do we get a new first down.  Those are the things I have been trying to see.”

The Hornets will be back in action Thursday, April 11, at 11 a.m.
