Opening Round Tee Times
AUBURN, Ala.—The Alabama State's women's golf team arrived in Auburn today for their final practice session before the 2013 East Region Championship which will be held May 9-11. Today's session involved each of the 24 teams in the region having an opportunity to get out on the Auburn University Club Course (par 72, 6,259 yards) during their allotted practice time getting to know the course.
“We are going to work on our tee shot and short game,” Head Coach Gary Grandison said. “It's all about angles; it's all about paying attention to details of yardages to certain spots. If you can get the ball off the tee and in play out here you can score and if you don't you will struggle.”
The Lady Hornets are made up of four freshmen and one sophomore, so this is the first region championship for each of the student athletes and it is an event both the coaching staff and the players are looking forward to.
“It is exciting and this whole experience has definitely been God's doing,” Grandison said. “This is a group that no matter how they perform they will represent Alabama State University well. We look forward to the opportunity and will make the most of it.”
The Lady Hornets won four of their 11 tournaments this season and had two second place finishes. One of those wins was the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship which earned the Lady Hornets their automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals.
Brooklyn Kraakman leads the Lady Hornets with a team-best 81.00 scoring average. Cousin Jenelle Kraakman is next at 81.17, followed by
Mia Campbell's 82.70,
Shanon Spinuzzi's 86.91 and Darleen Raymond's 89.05.
Jenelle Kraakman was the low medalist (160) at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship and led the Lady Hornets to their second title in the past three years. She was joined on the All-SWAC First Team by Campbell.
Brooklyn Kraakman and Spinuzzi were named to the second team.
The Lady Hornets will open their region play tomorrow when their first tee time is scheduled off the 10
th tee at 12:55 p.m.
