AUBURN, Ala.—The Lady Hornets have one of the youngest team's in the NCAA Regionals with four freshmen and a sophomore filling out the roster. And with that youth and inexperience playing on the national stage, you would expect the team to play up and down, and that is what happened on the first round of the NCAA East Regional.
The Lady Hornets played the back nine first and
Mia Campbell made the turn with a strong 39. Darleen Raymond was right behind her with a 40 and
Shanon Spinuzzi shot a 42. Janelle and
Brooklyn Kraakman each shot a 43 through the first nine holes. When ASU made they turn they were 20 over par.
The second nine of the day saw the Lady Hornets shoot seven strokes off the first nine finishing with a +27. On the day ASU shot a 335 (165-170).
“Most of them played ok in spurts and there were a few holes that got them, but this course is designed that way,” Head Coach Gary Grandison said. “If you don't play in control off the tee you will pay for it, but I'm pleased with the way they carried themselves. They are a young group.”
The Lady Hornets were led by Campbell's 81 (39-42 +9).
Janelle Kraakman was next with an 83 (43-40 +11). Raymond finished with an 84 (40-44 +12),
Brooklyn Kraakman shot an 87 (43-44 +15) and Spinuzzi finished the day with a 90 (42-48 +18).
“I really want to see how we adjust for tomorrow,” Grandison said. “We tee off early in the morning and I want to see how they respond and that will tell me a lot.”
The Lady Hornets made up the final five groups off the course in the first day of action, but will be among the first in Friday's action as they tee off at 8:25 a.m.
“It's part of it and it is the way it has to be when you have so many teams playing, but it is fair,” Grandison said. “You are swapping with the lower seed so tomorrow the lower seeds are teeing off early and that is ok. We're fine and they seem to be ok we just need to get ready for tomorrow.”
