Season Recap: Men's Basketball

This is a recap of the 2012-13 men's basketball season.

Alabama State played one of the toughest schedules in the school's history, facing four teams that played in post season tournaments. ASU featured 10 first-year players, and along with the tough schedule, the Hornets finished with a 10-22 overall record. Their 8-10 conference record placed them in a tie for fifth place in the conference.

The youthful Hornets played hard during the season with nine of the 22 losses coming by seven points or less, including two in overtime.
ASU played 17 games on the road during the season, starting off with road games at Middle Tennessee, Florida and Central Florida. All teams that had over 20 wins during the 2012-13 season.

After a close five point home loss to Savannah State, ASU hit the road again for games at Troy, Chicago State and Detroit, before returning home and picking up their first win of the season over Troy in a return game against the Trojans.

After dropping road losses at Evansville and Georgia Tech, ASU played in the Tulane Classic and fell in two close games to Pepperdine (66-58) and in overtime to Texas-Pan American (70-66).

ASU came home to play three consecutive home games. ASU won all three of those games beginning with a non-conference win over longtime intercity rival Auburn Montgomery. ASU then started the conference season off by defeating Jackson State and Grambling. The three game winning streak was the longest of the season.

ASU dropped a road loss at Arkansas-Pine Bluff and then defeated Mississippi Valley State to start the conference off with a 4-1 record.

The Hornets dropped five of their next six games with the only win coming over Alcorn State. Standing 4-3 after the Alcorn State win, ASU fell in their next three conference games, with two of the three losses coming by four points or less.

The Hornets seemed to right the ship with consecutive wins over Mississippi Valley State and Alabama A&M to even their conference record at 6-6.

ASU ended the regular season falling in four of the final six games to drop into a fifth place tie at 8-10 in the final conference standings.

The Hornets faced Jackson State in the opening round of the SWAC tournament. Both games in the regular season were close as ASU won the opening game 70-66 and fell at JSU 70-65 in overtime.

The tournament game would be no different as ASU held a slim 31-30 halftime lead before JSU took the lead in the second half. ASU trailed 54-43 with over eight minutes left and cut the lead to three at 62-59 with 18 seconds left, but could get no closer in the season ending loss.

ASU had two players finish the season averaging in double figures with Josh Freelove leading the way at 13.6 points per game. Phillip Crawford also averaged double figures at 12.6 points per game and led the team in rebounding with six per outing. He also shot 56 percent from the field.

Jamel Waters turned into one of the best freshmen point guards in the conference. He finished the season third in the SWAC in steals with 54, fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.5), seventh in free throw percentage (.753) and eighth in the in assists (3.1).

Two players received honors for their play during the season. Josh Freelove was named to the All-Tournament team at the Tulane Classic and Phillip Crawford was named the SWAC Player of the Week two times on his way to being named Second Team All-SWAC.
