Anuk Christiansz and the Alabama State University Men's and Women's tennis teams saw an improved 2013 campaign.
The men's squad upheld a 6-12 overall record and went 2-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play; while the women's team posted a 4-16 overall record and went 3-2 as well in conference play, which included both squads making an appearance in the 2013 SWAC Tournament. The Hornets competed and were eliminated in the semifinal round by named SWAC Champions Prairie View A&M University; while the Lady Hornets were eliminated in the first round by PVA&M.
Although both teams had tough roads to travel, each became better competitors as the season progressed. The men began their season splitting matches in Tuscaloosa, Ala. with the University of Alabama (L, 0-7) and Jackson State University (W, 5-2); while the women dropped their first seven contests.
The Hornets then came back home to compete in a showdown with instate rival Stillman College. ASU defeated the Tigers by a score of 5-2. They then lost their next three contests, before competing in the SWAC West Roundup where they won two of three.
ASU's men squad came back from the roundup and won one of its final five regular-season contests before defeating in-state rival and conference foe Alabama A&M during the SWAC Tournament.
The Lady Hornets became more modest down the stretch, taking two of four victories from the SWAC West Roundup, defeating the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff (4-3) and Grambling State University (4-2). They then lost their next two before defeating arch rival and conference foe Alabama A&M University (5-2). The ladies won their final game oof the season two weeks later, knocking off the University of North Alabama by a score of 4-3.
Jared Thompson and
Julian Cseszko each received All-SWAC honors for their play during singles competition throughout the season for the Hornets; while
Katja Kraus, Arantixia Wijingaarde,
Bobby Brand,
Lex Pierre,
Stefan Vojnic, and
Roderick Williams received All-SWAC honors in doubles.
