The 2012 Alabama State University soccer team, under the tutelage of then sixth year head coach
Jodie Smith, season saw several “firsts” in program's history. ASU won a program-high seven contests which included a 2-2 record against Southwestern Athletic Conference institutions and a huge victory over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, 1- 0. It was the first time the program had two First-Team All-SWAC College Sports Madness recipients in sophomore forward
Alexandria Cannon, who was also named College Sports Madness SWAC Player of the Year, and junior forward
India Pleasant.
The Lady Hornets (7-9-2) finished fourth in the Eastern Division, having for the first time five players being named to the post-season All-Conference Teams (Cannon-forward First-Team; Lena Lamas-midfielder Second-Team; Iita Pieninmaki-defender Second-Team; and
Kylee Hathaway-goalkeeper Second-Team), including the SWAC Freshman of the Year (
Anastasia McCleary-forward First-Team).
Alabama State reached a few more firsts during its campaign. Hathaway set the single-season record for shutouts with five and goals against average (1.68). Cannon registered the program's best offensive season thus far by setting a single-season record in goals with eleven and points with twenty-seven. Pleasant set the program's record for the most points in a contest with seven, including three goals and two assists in a home victory over Judson College.
The season opened with a 5-3 defeat to instate and non-conference rival Troy University, before traveling to Chattanooga, Tenn. and upsetting UT-Chattanooga, 1-0 on an eight-yard free kick off the foot of Pleasant, assisted by teammate Cannon in the sixty-first minute of the contest. The Lady Hornets then went on to drop its next four contests before coming back home to overwhelm another powerhouse non-conference program in Lipscomb University, 1-0. Again, Pleasant came through in a critical moment to score the game-winning goal in the fifty-fifth minute for ASU off an assist from then junior defender
Stephanie Howard.
Looking to keep the momentum going, Alabama State faced and tied with Georgia Southwestern State University in a 2-all contest and the University of West Alabama in a 1-all matchup before thrashing Judson College, 6-0 and overpowering conference rival Alabama A&M, 2-0.
The Lady Hornets fell to the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a 2-0 contest; while knocking off Grambling, 4-0 two days later. ASU won two of its last five contests (Southern 3-2 and Alcorn 2-1), including a loss in the SWAC Tournament to No. 1 seed Prairie View, 3-2 in the quarterfinal round.
