Defense was that Good; Offense is Fixable

The question following the Alabama State football scrimmage over the weekend, was the defense really as good as they looked or did the offense just have a bad day. They answer is yes on both accounts.

"The defense did some good things on Saturday," Head Coach Reggie Barlow said. "They were playing way faster than the offense and guys were getting lined up. We moved some guys around and we wanted to get a look at how they would play in the scrimmage and they did a good job."

The offense could only muster a 174 yards and one score. They had a fumble on the longest drive of the scrimmage and also missed a field goal. So it was a film session the coaching staff took a long look at on the offense.

"We watched the film and there are definitely some things we have to correct offensively, but it wasn't as bad as I felt when I left the field," Barlow said. "All of the things we saw are correctable and we should be able to get it worked out."

There are only 12 days before the season opener with Jacksonville State and the coaching staff has almost set their two deep on both sides of the ball. There could be a few changes before the Aug. 31 kick off, but there will not be many.

"Our two-deep is in place. There might be one or two guys that may become a part of it but we have those positions set," Barlow said. "Guys just have to hold on because sometimes you can feel you are a starter and you get relaxed, but hopefully they will stay on the task at hand."

ASU has completed their two-a-days and will revert back to one–a-day practice sessions. Tuesday the Hornets will practice at 3:30 p.m. before taking Wednesday off for the first day of classes.
