Alabama State will hold its final scrimmage of the preseason at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at the New ASU Stadium. Like the first two scrimmages, this scrimmage will also be closed to the public.
The scrimmage will not be like the first two scrimmages as the team will not be in a full-scale tackle scrimmage. With only one week remaining until the season opener, the Hornets are not looking to get anyone hurt.
"We are calling it a practice scrimmage, because we are not going to tackle," Head Coach
Reggie Barlow said. "We are going to still run our plays and get a look at the guys moving around. We are looking at guys using the day to get better."
"We are trying to keep them healthy and to continue their on-going skill development," Barlow added. "We are going to continue putting them through our system and making sure they have it."
ASU has been through three weeks of training and there has been some solid improvements, but there is one area the coaching staff sees as a vital need for improvement.
"From a conditioning standpoint I am a bit concerned and disturbed," Barlow said. "We want to pride ourselves as a great conditioned team. I know the only way you get in game shape is to play the game, but our bigger guys are not fighting through fatigue the way we need them to. I'm a little disappointed with that but hopefully we will get there."
Following Saturday's work, the Hornets will take Sunday off before starting game week Monday at 3 p.m.
