The Alabama State University soccer team opened preseason camp Wednesday morning in the heat at ASU Soccer Field.

The Hornets kicked off a series of 19 practices leading up to the team's 2013 debut, an Aug. 18 home exhibition against the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

"I'm really pleased at what I've seen so far," ASU Head coach Jodie Smith stated. "I think we've come in fit. Obviously, it's very hot out here so we have to adapt to this environment but like I stated earlier, my staff and I are very pleased at what we've seen so far."

Junior forward Alexandria Cannon, a first team All-SWAC honoree last season, paces the Alabama State attack after setting the school's single-season record for goals (11), points (27), shots taken (60), and game-winning goals (3) during her sophomore campaign.

"We are returning all three attacking players, including two dynamic frontrunners we just added so I think it's going to be our deepest position on the field," Smith stated. "On the offensive end, we should be capable of being in every game and competing."

Defensively, the Hornets return starters senior Stephanie Howard, junior Iita Pienimaki, sophomore Mariel Smith, and senior Samantha Bruno while junior Kylee Hathaway continues to be a force between the posts.

"We're going to build from the back forward and work on defending first," Smith mentioned. "A major part of our recruiting revolved around our defense and we've addressed that. I think moving forward we're going to be more dynamic on the back line."

Kickoff for the Hornets' exhibition match against the Chargers is set for 2 p.m. Admission to all ASU home soccer contests is free.
