Hornets Set to Host Golden Lions

ASU practices for UAPB
Alabama State University's men's basketball team will be looking to knock the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) undefeated list when the Golden Lions come to Montgomery Monday, Jan. 13.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

ASU (8-6/2-1 SWAC) enters the game coming off a 93-point performance in a 31-point win over Mississippi Valley State University.  The Hornets are also looking to run their 2013-14 home record to 7-0.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (4-10/2-0 SWAC) is coming off a hard-fought 72-64 road win at Alabama A&M Saturday evening.

Alabama State has been riding the consistent scoring of DeMarcus Robinson, Jamel Waters and Bobby Brown, as all three players are averaging in double figures.  Robinson leads the group at 14 points per game.  Waters averages 13.7 and Brown 10.5.

Maurice Strong leads the team averaging 6.4 rebounds per game while Luther Page averages 6.0 and Brown 5.0.  Waters continues to not only score for the Hornets but gets everyone else involved in the offense as he is averaging a SWAC-high seven assists per game.

UAPB (4-10/2-0 SWAC) is led in scoring by Jaylon Floyd at 13 points per game.  Davon Haynes is also averaging in double digits at 12.9 points and is also the team's leading rebounder averaging 6.8 per game.

The Golden Lions have struggled at times scoring the basketball as they only shoot 40 percent from the field.  But as with all UAPB team's they live and die with their defense.  They are allowing 77 points per game over the course of the season, but in conference play their defense is only allowing 68 points per game and lead the SWAC in steals averaging 10.4 per game.

"Coach Ivory's teams do two things, they play hard on defense and attack the basket on offense," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "We did some good things against Valley, but this is a totally different team.  They have good size and really like to get into the lane with their guards.  We must play sound on defense and keep their guards out of the lane because that is where it all begins for them."

"They also score a lot of breakaway baskets due to picking up steals on defense.  We turned the ball over way too many times in our first few conference games and these will be the quickest guards we have faced so we have to get our ball handlers to take care of the ball."

The game will be shown live on HornetVision while the game can be listened to live on WVAS FM 90.7.
