The 2014-15 basketball season officially got underway at Alabama State as the Lady Hornets and Hornets hosted Tip Off Madness.
Â
The evening started with both teams autographing the new schedule posters from 5:30-6:30 p.m. As the women's team entered the floor for some pregame warmups there were several opportunities for the fans to sign up for various games such as shoot outs during the halftime periods of each game.
Â
The Mighty Marching Hornets entertained the crowd throughout the evening as an enthusiastic crowd showed up for the games.
Â
The women led off the double header playing two 30-minute halves with a continuous running clock. With eight freshmen and 12 returners making up the Lady Hornets this season, the teams were divided up with several returning players and newcomers on each team.
Â
The Gold team jumped out to a 39-24 halftime lead and withstood a second-half run by the Black team to hold on for a 53-46 victory.
Â
The Gold team was led by freshman and former Carver standout
Kendra Fowler with 14 points. Returning junior
Jasmine Peeples had 10 and
Brittney Wright, another returner had nine.
Â
The fans were able to get their first glimpse of 6'-7"
Tiara Calloway who missed all of last season with an injury. The redshirt freshman led the Black team with 12 points while
Brittney Howard had 10.
Â
"We have to get in shape, but I saw some great things as far as the girls pushing the ball up and down the floor," Head Coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson said. "We have a lot of girls that can put the ball in the basket it's just a matter of us playing solid defense.  That is something I constantly preach to the young ladies because we have guards that can get the ball down the floor and girls that can score on the fast break and we are going to have to do it as a team."
Â
The men's team came out and put on a show in the first half as neither team could make any kind of a run to pull away. The Black team hit their first three field goals, all high-flying dunks as they held a slim 36-33 at intermission.
Â
The Black team pulled away in the second half and led by as many as 18 points before settling in for a 79-69 victory in the men's part of the Tip Off Madness.
Â
Bobby Brown led the Black team with a game-high 23 points while
Maurice Strong had 16 and
DeMarcus Robinson had 12.
Â
Brandon Graham was the high scorer for the Gold team with 18 points. He was joined in double digits by
Tony Armstrong with 14 and freshman Steven Rogers had 12.
Â
"We have to work defensively of course, but we do have some guys that can put it in the hole a little bit," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "Some nights the offense is going to be fickled so you have to be able to get some stops. We are very athletic and we want to get the ball and get up and down the floor faster than our opponents and just try to attack the basket. Once we start to grasp that we have a chance to have to be a good team."
Â
The season starts in earnest Nov. 6 when the Lady Hornets host Faulkner in an exhibition game at 6 p.m. The men will begin their season Nov. 14 when they host Auburn Montgomery at 7 p.m.
