For the first time in school history Alabama State competed in the SWAC Bowling Championship against state rival Alabama A&M.
Alabama A&M took game one of the best of seven series 218-179 but the Hornets responded with an 181-146 win of their own. The Bulldogs would take game three 202-191, as the Hornets would go on to win the last three games, 190-184, 189-165, and 196-176. Even though Alabama State won the series 4-2, the Hornets would have to beat the Bulldogs twice to win the championship.
In the second best of seven series, Alabama State took the first game 172-162, while Alabama A&M took game two 247-165. The Hornets won game three 225-178 and took a 2-1 lead before the Bulldogs won games four and five 210-203 and 201-142. It came down to game six, the Hornets could win to force a seventh game or the Bulldogs could win it all. The game came down to the last four frames but the Hornets couldn't pull it off as the Alabama A&M won 227-200 to win the championship.

In the most recent National Tenpin Coaches Association poll the Hornets were ranked 20
th receiving 29 points.
