Alabama State football held the first of 15 scheduled spring practices Tuesday morning at Hornet Stadium.
Under cold, cloudy conditions, the Hornets worked for more than an hour on technique and getting back into the flow of on-field practice.
"Day one was good and fast," head coach
Reggie Barlow said. "I was happy with the guys' energy and enthusiasm. Everyone was happy to be our here, so all is all it went well."
With six weeks until the Black and Gold Spring Game on Saturday, April 12, Barlow has several key things he will keep close evaluation on.
"We want to see where we are from a conditioning standpoint," Barlow said. "I thought the guys moved around well today. We want to continue to do that. Also, we really want to evaluate the young guys to see where they are. We want to see how our older players show leadership. It's a combination of all those things, and we're off to a good start."
The Hornets return to practice Thursday at 11 a.m. and Friday at 3 p.m.
It was a cold and rainy Pro Day at New Hornet Stadium as 11 former Hornet players displayed their talents in front of many scouts from different National Football League (NFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL) teams.
Â
ASU All-Americans
Isaiah Crowell and
Bobby Wenzig came back to campus to participate in Pro Day and there were several standout performances for some of the players who had not had a chance to display their talents in front of scouts before.
Â
Wenzig, who has already been to one punting camp to kick in front of the scouts this spring, came back to show his strength and speed.
Â
"The bench press and 40 are some extra things I can do to show that I am athletic," Wenzig said. "Last week I went to Gary Zauner's kicking camp (in California) and I showed them my kicking skills and if I can get a recommendation from that then I will get to speak to all of the teams."
Â
Crowell was the only Hornet and one of 32 running backs invited to the NFL Combine several days ago. He came back to Montgomery to improve on some of the drills and to build on his solid performance from the combine.
Â
"I really just have to stay focused and dedicated on what I am doing," Crowell said. "Everything has been nice, but I have been grinding. I did a good time (on the 40) but I thought I could have done better. If it was not raining I would have run it again, but with it raining I didn't think I it would help me out to run it again."
Crowell has gone through several interviews with some of the NFL teams and knows he needs to get into a camp following draft day.
Â
"I am really just trying to get on a team and working some football stuff instead of track stuff," Crowell said. "I have talked with the Browns and the Raiders and the Ravens I have talked to several times."
