MONTGOMERY – Alabama State University's Kourtney Berry has been named a finalist for the STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year. There are 25 finalists up for the award. Â
Berry has been among the conference and national leaders all season with his production on the Hornets defense. He finished the season with a SWAC-best 130 total tackles, which broke his record of 128 last season.

He also led the SWAC in solo tackles (59), tackles per game (11.8) and was second in assists (71).

Nationally Berry ranks fifth in total tackles and his tackles per game average are sixth. He is also 29
th in the nation in solo stops.

The voting has begun for all STATS FCS awards and a national panel of sports information and media relations director, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries select the winner from the regular season performances.

Those top three in each category who receive the most votes will be invited to the announcement of the winners at the STATS FCS Awards Banquet scheduled for Jan. 8 in Frisco, Texas. The Banquet is in conjunction with the FCS Championship Game which will be played the next day.
