A total of 14 Alabama State University athletics programs scored at or above the national benchmark of 930 as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its annual academic progress ratings.  A total of 17 of ASU's 18 athletics programs meet the qualifications for post-season eligibility for the upcoming 2016-17 year.
 
The Academic Progress Rate (APR) is a four-year average based on the school's overall student-athlete eligibility, and graduation and retention rates for student-athletes who participated during the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14, and 2014-15 academic years. The APR also serves as a predictor of graduation success.

In single-year scores for 2014-15, five ASU programs scored a perfect 1000: men's basketball, men's cross country, men's golf, women's country, and women's golf.
 
Over the four-year period between 2011-12 and 2014-15, a total of six programs scored 960 or above: women's golf (1000) women's cross country (991), men's golf (988), women's soccer (977), women's basketball (973), and women's bowling (972). 
 
A total of eight programs scored between 930-959: women's tennis (959), women's volleyball (957), men's cross country (953), women's track (952), baseball (948), men's track (939), men's basketball (938), and softball (935). 
 
The Hornet football program scored a 902, but met requirements during the 2014-15 year to earn post-season eligibility as well as the full 20-hour practice time allotted by the NCAA for Fall 2016. 
 
Based on the multi-year report, only men's tennis (917) received a postseason ban for the 2016-17 season.
 
For purposes of APR, NCAA considers indoor and outdoor track as one sport.
 
"We are again proud and salute the academic accomplishments of our student-athletes," Alabama State Athletic Director Melvin Hines said. Our student-athletes continue to shine in the classroom, in competition, and in the community, and we will continue to provide resources to aid them in their success. We will remain diligent in our goal for every program to achieve postseason eligibility."
