Barbee, Brown added to softball staff

MONTGOMERY, Ala. –With the future of the Alabama State University program in mind, head coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson set out to add more people onto her staff to make the program even better.

For the past two seasons that coach Wilcoxson has been with ASU, she had a three-man staff.

This year she has extended that to a five-man staff, bringing in Grad Assistant Allison Barbee and volunteer assistant Hunter Brown.

Barbee, a former Southern Wesleyan University softball player, was a four-year college starter. Her main positions were catcher, pitcher, and shortstop.

Throughout her softball career, she was named to numerous conference teams and player of the weeks. She led her team in home runs, RBIs, runs scored all four years of college.

Her experiences include coaching a 14-under Knoxville team as well as an 18u team. Her 18u team placed in the top 60 ASA "A" nationals in her first year and top 9 at ASA "A" Nationals in her second year.

Barbee was asked where she thinks she will be used the most in the program. "I'm not sure exactly where I will be used, but I look forward to the experience and I am grateful for the opportunity to be apart of a program that is built solely around family," Barbee explained.

Based on her expertise, Barbee will be a big part of this season.

Hunter Brown is also in his first year with ASU as a volunteer assistant. For most of his career, Brown was a catcher.

He has played baseball as well as officiated softball for the past ten years.

"I played baseball which is a little bit different than softball, but I believe I bring a lot of knowledge to the team," Brown said.

When asked why he decided to pursue coaching Brown explained, "I was given the opportunity to coach my younger sister in softball as well as help out with recreational teams in my town, and it really opened my mind to the fact that I could really make a difference in someone's life."

Brown really wants to guide athletes in the right direction to make them a better athlete as well as prepare them for any future endeavors.

"I would like for us as a team to have a winning season, repeat as the conference champions, and receive a bid to the NCAA tournament once again," Brown said.

Adding more to the ASU softball staff will add more knowledge for these girls to benefit from. Allowing them to perform at the best of their abilities.
