MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University football team opened its preseason camp on Friday morning with the first official day of practice at the Houston Markham Jr. Football Complex.

With the first practice, third-year head coach Brian Jenkins and his staff did an early morning walk-through with position players before officially getting the fall camp underway shortly before 9 a.m.

"Today's opening practice was good," Jenkins said. "Everybody was upbeat and moving around. I was very impressed with our first practice. It's early… It was a first practice and the guys have energy because they are excited to be back. Let's see if we can be consistent with the effort we gave today and the execution that we had."

The coaching staff felt they had a good start to fall practice and will look to continue on it during the fall camp. While it was just the first practice, Jenkins and his staff already have some goals in place for the upcoming season.

"Win!" Jenkins said. "We want to win and nothing else matters. We've got two goals in this program – win in the classroom and win on the football field."

The Hornets will continue its early start on Saturday with the second day of preseason camp at the Houston Markham Jr. Football Complex. The first official day of full pads is on Monday.

Alabama State opens the season with the Labor Day Classic: A Marion Nine Invitational against rival Tuskegee at the ASU Football Stadium.
