Hornets Climb to 2nd at SWAC Golf Championship

ALEXANDRIA, La.
– After carding the low round Tuesday at the 2010 Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship, the Alabama State University men's golf team moved into second place in the team standings heading into final round action Wednesday at the Oak Wing Golf Club.

The Hornets, who entered second round play in third place, fired a round of 300 to pull within three shots of tournament leader Jackson State. JSU leads the championship with a 36-hole total of 610 followed by ASU at 613.

Senior Kyle Demeester posted ASU's best round Tuesday shooting a one-over-par 73. Sophomore John Montgomery was one shot behind at 74 while freshman Sam Strachan carded his second consecutive 75. Freshman Michael Stringfellow finished with a 78, marking a three-shot improvement, and sophomore Greg Keafer rounded out the Bama State lineup with a second round 80.

Strachan still leads the ASU squad ranking third in the individual medalist competition with a two-day score of 150. Demeester and Montgomery are tied for fifth at 152 while Stringfellow is tied for 16th and Keafer ranks in a tie for 22nd.

Jackson State tallied a second round 302 to maintain its lead in the team competition. Texas Southern (617)  trails ASU by four shots in third place followed by Grambling State (627), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (648), Prairie View A&M (662), Southern (697), Alabama A&M (708), Mississippi Valley State (826) and Alcorn State (949).

SWAC Championship action concludes Wednesday with a final 18-hole round on the par 72, 7,043-yard layout at Oak Wing.
