Dec. 3, 2005

Final Stats

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Alabama State grabbed a lead midway through the first half against Savannah State and went up by as many as 11 points in the second half before holding off a late rally by the Lady Tigers in a 60-56 win.

Danielle Sanders scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds, L'Teisha Holloway added 11 points and Shantae Robinson came off the bench for nine points, seven assists and seven steals in ASU's first win (1-3). Shaunte Carter scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the losing effort for Savannah State (1-6).

After a sluggish start, Frantina Coleman connected on a 3-pointer with 8:43 left in the first half to give the Lady Hornets a 13-10 advantage. ASU would go up by as many as eight points but Savannah State hald Bama State scoreless the last 2:17 of the first half and trailed only 27-24 at the half.

ASU would start the second half on a 14-6 run and led 47-36 with 9:22 remaining in the game. The Lady Tigers, though, would slowly chip away at the Lady Hornets' advantage and after a 3-point play by Lashara Smith with nine seconds remaining, SSU had closed to within two, 58-56.

But Holloway was fouled immediately on the inbound play and she knocked down both free throws to secure the victory for the Lady Hornets, who play next in their home opener against Stillman College on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m.
