Final Stats
ALCORN STATE, Miss. -
Alcorn State has always been a tough place for the Lady Hornets to leave with a victory. Things, unfortunately, weren't much different Saturday night at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
Despite a double-double from Latille Ross (14 points, 14 rebounds) and the return of leading scorer L'Teisha Holloway, Alabama State lost 56-49 to the Lady Braves, who never trailed in the ball game. The win ended Bama State's modest two-game win streak.
Alcorn State used a 14-4 run midway through the second half to break a 35-all tie. During that stretch, the Lady Hornets went 2-of-10 from the field and had eight turnovers that led to 10 Lady Braves' points.
The Lady Hornets trailed 31-27 at halftime as Ross dominated in the opening 20 minutes. She scored 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds and added three assists as the rest of the offense struggled. Holloway, playing her first game in almost three weeks, missed all four of her first-half attempts from the field and went scoreless in 23 minutes.
Alcorn State might have taken a bigger lead into the half but was only 6-of-16 from the free throw line. Also, Rasaan Powell -- the Southwestern Athletic Conference's leading scorer at more than 21 points per game -- had trouble getting on track. She finished with six points on 2-of-12 shooting and had only four at the break.
Danielle Sanders had eight points and 11 rebounds while Frantina Coleman added eight points and three steals for the Lady Hornets, who are in action again Monday night when they take on SWAC-leading Southern at 8:30 p.m.
