MONTGOMERY, Ala. -
Alabama State's women's basketball team was at a loss before its game against Mississippi Valley State when it was revealed that freshman L'Teisha Holloway would be out for a couple of weeks with a foot injury.
The news wasn't much better at the end of the game, either.
The Lady Hornets struggled offensively with their leading scorer in street clothes, falling behind as many as 20 points in the second half before losing 56-45 at the Joe L. Reed Acadome.
"I didn't think having a freshman out of the game would have us so off-balanced," Freeman-Jackson said.
ASU (3-8, 1-2) shot only 24 percent in the first half and trailed by as many as 13 points before going into halftime down 32-21.
"Shantae (Robinson) hit a couple of jumpers early on but then we just got out of sync," Freeman-Jackson said. "After she hit those shots, then everyone else thought they could shoot them, too. We need to understand who our go-to girls are and let them take the shots."
Mississippi Valley (6-5, 2-0) only outrebounded ASU by two (43-41) but the Lady Hornets had trouble keeping Angela Howard off the boards. She finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
"We didn't do a good job rebounding. If we had done a better job on the boards, we would've had a better finish," Freeman-Jackson said.
Robinson was the only Lady Hornet in double figures, scoring 12 points and grabbing four rebounds. Elma Stevenson scored seven points and Latille Ross had six points, nine rebounds and four blocks off the bench.
