MOBILE, Ala. -
South Alabama used a four-run seventh inning to quell an Alabama State upset bid, posting a 7-3 win over the Hornets at Stanky Field on Monday.
With the game tied at three, Hornets ace Joshua Froneberger was summoned from the bullpen. But he was unable to keep the Jaguars at bay.
Patrick Weaver led off with a walk, followed by a single to left by David Freese. Michael Cart then bounced a ball through Selmon Pearson at third base plating both Weaver and Freese. Pinch-hitter Jeff Cunningham and designated hitter Ben Daw both picked up sacrifice flies to give USA the final margin of victory.
ASU (2-4) trailed 3-2 entering the seventh inning but Travis Johnson smacked a solo home run to start the frame. The Hornets went for more as Furquan Shamsud-Din doubled down the right field line and one out later, advanced to third on a wild pitch. But Terry Givens struck out and John Stevens grounded out to end the threat.
The loss wasted a strong effort by starter Cecil West, who gave up five hits and two earned runs over six innings of work. Anthony Hall continued his hot hitting, getting two hits and driving in a run for the Hornets, who play again Wednesday at Concordia in Selma.
