Troublesome Fourth Inning Trips Hornets at Alcorn State

April 1, 2006

Final Stats

ALCORN STATE, Miss. - The fourth inning has not been very good this season for Alabama State this season, the same inning Alcorn State took over game two of a three-game set against the Hornets.

For the season, ASU has been outscored 39-8 during the fourth inning and the Braves added to the misery Saturday afternoon, scoring five times in the frame en route to an 8-5 win over the Hornets.

Bradley Mann had a run-scoring single in the second to put the Hornets on top but the Braves got it back in the third on a RBI double by Caleb Betschart off Bama State starter Marcus Hogue. But a close game got out of hand in the next inning.

Hogue walked the first batter and hit the next before he was pulled in favor of Jake Paramore. From there, a two-run single by Ant Bell, RBI by Greg White and Betschart, and a wild pitch that scored a run put Alcorn State on top 6-1.

The Hornets made a comeback in the sixth, getting a two-run triple from Furquan Shamsud-Din and a two-run homer from Travis Johnson - his team-high fifth on the season - to cut the deficit to 7-5. The Braves, though, added another run in the bottom of the sixth to finish the scoring.

The Hornets and Braves play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
