Final Stats
ALCORN STATE, Miss. -
Alabama State's pitching depth has caused it some problems this season and a 12-3 loss to Alcorn State in the rubber game of a three-game set did not do much to defuse that theory.
But it was the Hornets' defense that was one of the biggest culprits in the loss during the series finale. ASU committed a season-high nine errors in the loss and only five of the Braves' 12 runs were earned.
After spotting Alcorn State a two-run lead, the Hornets fought back to take the lead in the second inning. Andre Jones was hit by a pitch to bring home a run, John Stevens tied the game with a sacrifice fly and Jake Paramore's run-scoring double gave ASU a 3-2 advantage.
From there, it was all downhill for Bama State. Jones committed three errors in the bottom of the second that ultimately helped the Braves score three times in retaking the lead. Alcorn State would then score four times in the sixth to put the game well out of reach.
Jauquin Respress pitched only two innings but took the loss. He gave up five runs - two earned - and walked five batters. Furquan Shamsud-Din had three hits and Anthony Hall added two to lead the ASU offensive attack.
Alabama State plays again on Tuesday when it hosts Grambling State at Paterson Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
