Alabama State has won five games this season in its last at-bat but was unable to use its late-game magic in a nine-inning, 6-3 loss to Grambling State in the nightcap of a doubleheader.
Clinton Smith, who gave up the game-tying run in the sixth inning, fell apart in the ninth and fell to 0-5 on the season. With two outs, he allowed the next five men to reach base before he was pulled in favor of Dequaris Reed. Before the Hornets could shut the door, the Tigers had put three runs on the board to take an insurmountable advantage.
Run-scoring singles by Anthony Hall, Terry Givens and Furquan Shamsud-Din had given ASU a 3-2 advantage after five innings. Starter Jauquin Respress was solid on the mound, allowing only six hits and two runs before being replaced by Smith in the sixth.
John Stevens had a game-high three hits for Alabama State is back in action Thursday when it travels to Tallahasse, Fla. to take on Florida A&M. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
