Montgomery, Ala. - With the Southern Lady Jaguars limping into Montgomery with a 1-5 conference record, Saturday looked like a great opportunity for Alabama State to pick up an important win. However, Southern put together its best effort of the season and upset ASU 61-57.

ASU's Assunta Fulgham opened the game's scoring with a free throw, and at 1-0 the Lady Hornets held their only lead of the entire game. In fact Southern led by as many as 11 points, a 53-42 margin with 5:41 remaining.

The Lady Hornets turned up the defensive pressure and ran off seven straight points to pull within three. Southern's Krystal Huggins knocked down a couple of free throws to temporarily stem the tide, but ASU was relentless and eventually tied the game at 57 on a L'Tiesha Holloway free throw.

Unfortunately for the Lady Hornets, that would be their last score of the game. Fredericka Lewis's power move inside and a couple of free throws by Ashley Blake secured Southern's win.

Fulgham led the Lady Hornets (5-11, 2-4 SWAC) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Essence Butler and Shantae Robinson each chipped in with 9 points.

Four Lady Jags (2-13, 2-5 SWAC) reach double figures in scoring. Lewis scored 16, while Blake added 15. Indi Johnson and Huggins each had 13.

The Lady Hornets are back in action when they host Alcorn State on Monday night after the men's game.
