Alcorn Outlasts Alabama State in Overtime Thriller

Jan. 23, 2007

Final Stats

Despite a brilliant floating jump shot by Dustin Richmond capping a 17-point rally and sending the game into overtime, Alabama State fell to Alcorn State 80-77 Monday night.

After taking a 42-33 to the half, Alcorn steadily push their lead to 17 at 60-43 with 9:46 remaining. That's when the Hornets turned up the defense, pounded the offensive boards, and saw Richmond, Andrews Hayles and Joel Bosh.

Andrew Hayles scored a neat left-handed layup with :19 remaining to pull ASU within one. Alcorn's Patrick Horton was fouled, but made only one of his two free throws setting the stage for Richmond's heroics.

With the clock running down, he penetrated to the left elbow and let it go. The shot swished the nets just as the clock expired tying the game.

Even though the Hornets scored first in the extra period, the old free throw shooting woes returned as ASU missed four shots from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, Alcorn hit all four of their attempts to lock up the win.

Alcorn (6-13, 5-3 SWAC) was led by Horton and Alex Owumi's 17 point's each. Delvin

Hayles led ASU with 19 points. Joel Bosh added 13 points and 8 rebounds.

The Hornets (5-13, 3-4 SWAC) will try to get back on the winning track Saturday night when they travel to play Prairie View.
