Former Alabama State standout Michael Coe has been invited to participate in this weekend's Senior Bowl, the nation's premiere postseason college all-star game.
After a sterling senior season and a strong performance during the week leading up to and during the East-West Shrine game in Houston, Coe has been rated among the very best cornerbacks available for the upcoming National Football League draft.
"Wow, the Senior Bowl!" Coe said. "It's a great honor to have a chance to go up against the top players in the country. I believe I can hold my own against anyone, and this gives me a chance to prove it."
Coe, who has already earned a degree in mass communications, transferred to ASU after three years at the University of Arkansas so he could play for his father, Hornets' head coach Charles Coe.
"Obviously, as parents we are thrilled," said Coach Coe. "As a football coach, I know the things he is capable of on the field. This year, for the first time, I was able to really watch him up close; he really is a very good football player."
In 2006, Michael was named All-SWAC, leading the conference in passes defended and tying for first in passing broken up. Coe showed his versatility by playing safety in several games and serving as the Hornets primary punt return man throughout the season.
While at Arkansas, Coe tied for the team lead in interceptions as a sophomore and was second in that category as a junior.
During Senior Bowl week, general managers, coaches and scouts from every NFL teams are on hand to evaluate and explore players in team practices, individual workouts and interviews.
Other players in this year's Senior Bowl include Heisman trophy winner Troy Smith from Ohio State, quarterback Chris Leak of the national champion Florida Gators and Lombardi Award winner LaMarr Woodley of Michigan.
Micheal Coe is the only player from a Division I-AA or historically black institution.
The Senior Bowl will air nationally on the NFL network. Kickoff is Saturday at 3 p.m.
Coe has also been invited to participate in the NFL combine, which will be held in Indianapolis February 21-27.
