Shooting Struggles Doom Lady Hornets

Jan. 3, 2007

Final Stats

Though they'd lost their last two games by decisive margins, the Alabama State Lady Hornets felt like they were ready for the SWAC season. And despite an overall solid effort, the Jackson State Lady Tigers outlasted ASU 52-46.

After jumping out to a small lead early, ASU fell behind 21-13 at the half. At the beginning of the second half, Daphne Williams capped a 12-4 run with a long 3-point shot and the Lady Hornets were within one. The Lady Tigers - preseason favorites to win the SWAC - responded with back to back three point shots to build a six point cushion.

Still, ASU refused to go away and pulled with two at 43-41 with 4:09 to go. The teams exchanged scores, before the Lady Hornets missed two free throws and five out of there last six shots to give Jackson State breathing room. The Lady Tigers sealed the game by burying five straight free throws.

"We've simply got to find a way to make more shots," ASU assistant coach Clayton Harris said, referring to the Lady Hornets 32% shooting.

"No matter what kind of defense we play, if we can't score points - especially when the other team is shooting so many free throws--we aren't going to win."

The free throw disparity was evident as JSU shot 20-35 while ASU only attempted 17 while making eight.

Williams and Jasmon Hazley -both freshmen- led the Lady Hornets in scoring with 13 and 12 points respectively.

ASU is back in action Thursday night as they host Grambling. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
